To: Young Prospective Referees and Their Parents Being a community oriented organization, TYSL has always put its best efforts to provide Troy youth with life-enriching opportunities, such as becoming and developing as a young referee. In recent years, TYSL has reached a point that there are too many referees for the number of games we have. This past season we had a total of 83 active referees, including 16 first-timers, with an average of 11 assignments per referee. 25 assignments a season is what we believe to be desirable for any referee to make a firm commitment to, and to stand a realistic chance to learn and improve. As a result we are forced to become more selective in accepting new young referees. Effective immediately, the Troy Soccer Referee Association in conjunction with TYSL will implement new guidelines for referee applicants and also for current referee membership renewal. These procedures will be in effect for the fall 2010 soccer season.
In addition to being a Troy resident (a requirement that we introduced 2 years ago), a very strong preference will be given to those who play for a TYSL or TSC team. Furthermore, we will accept no more than 5 new young referees each season. If anyone is interested in refereeing with TYSL, please submit a formal application letter, and a recommendation letter from a coach whom one has been playing for. We strongly encourage such an application be submitted before one has taken the entry-level referee class, so we can provide feedback to the extent possible. Please submit the application to: TYSL Young Referee Application, 1977 E. Wattles, Suite H, Troy, Michigan 48085. The deadline for application, for the upcoming Fall season, is July 20. TYSL Board
